Can an 18 year old still take the complete Teen Driver Education Course?

Yes, an 18-year-old can absolutely still take the complete Teen Driver Education Course.

While many 18-year-olds opt for adult-specific remedial or short-term courses, choosing the full teen program offers a few distinct advantages:

  • Comprehensive Training: You receive the full 24 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel (BTW) training, which is much more thorough than standard adult requirements.

  • The DT Certificate: Completing this course grants you a Driver Training (DT) Certificate.

  • Testing Flexibility: This certificate is particularly valuable because it allows you to take the Driver's Exam multiple times over the course of one year if you don't pass on your first attempt.

Ohio State Requirements

What does the state of Ohio require for a license?

If you are under 18 years of age and you would like to obtain a driver's license, the following requirements must be met:

  • 24 Hours of Classroom Instruction: This can often be completed in person at a driving school or through an approved online provider.

  • 8 Hours of Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Training: This must be done with a certified driving instructor.

  • 50 Hours of Practice: In addition to professional lessons, the state requires 50 hours of driving with a parent or guardian, including 10 hours of night driving.

  • You must hold your TIPIC for at least six (6) months.

How long do I have to complete my ONLINE Course?

Course Completion Deadlines

  • Online Theory: You have 6 months from your registration date to finish the online portion. If you miss this window, the course will reset, and you will have to pay again.

  • Behind-the-Wheel (BTW): Once the online course is finished, you have a separate 6-month window to complete your 8 hours of driving. This countdown begins on the date of your first driving session.

What is the minimum age requirement to start In-Class instruction?

A student in Ohio can begin their 24 hours of classroom instruction once they hit the 15-year and five-month milestone.

It is a great time to start because it allows students to get a head start on the theory before they are eligible to receive their temporary permit at age 15 and six months.

Are Permits accepted in Apple Wallet since the Governor announced that Driver's Licenses can be uploaded and utilized there?

No, while the State of Ohio has moved toward allowing digital Driver's Licenses in Apple Wallet, driver training centers have specific documentation requirements.

  • Hard Copy Required: For all driver training purposes (such as your Behind-the-Wheel lessons), you must present a physical hard copy of your permit.

  • No Electronic Versions: Digital versions or uploads in Apple Wallet are not accepted for these sessions.

Note: Always keep your physical permit in a safe, accessible place to avoid missing a scheduled drive!
