In Ohio, the process for getting your driver's license depends largely on your age. A major law change went into effect on September 30, 2025, requiring all drivers under 21 to complete a formal driver education program.
1. Get Your Temporary Permit (TIPIC)
Regardless of age, everyone starts here. You must be at least 15½ years old to apply.
- Knowledge Test: Pass a 40-question multiple-choice test on motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs (75% passing score required). This can be taken online or at a driver exam station.
- Vision Screening: Pass a standard vision test.
- Documentation: Bring proof of full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, and Ohio residency (two documents for a "Compliant" Real ID).
- Fee: Approximately $26.50.
2. Complete Education & Training
Requirements vary based on your age at the time of application:
Under 18 Requirements
- Classroom Drivers Ed: 24 Hours
- In-Car Training: 8 Hours with a certified driving instructor
- Practice Hours: 50 hours (10 at night)
- Permit Hold Time: Must hold for 6 months
Ages 18-20 Requirements
- Classroom Drivers Ed: 24 Hours
- In-Car Training: 8 Hours with a certified driving instructor
- Practice Hours: 50 hours (10 at night)
- Permit Hold Time: No minimum hold time
21+ Requirements
- Classroom Drivers Ed: None*
- In-Car Training: None*
- Practice Hours: Recommended
- Permit Hold Time: No minimum hold time
*Note: If you are 21+ and fail your first road test attempt, you will then be required to take an Abbreviated Adult Driver Training Course before retesting.
3. The Driving & Skills Test
Once education and practice hours are logged, you can schedule your road test.
- The Vehicle: You must provide a vehicle in good working order (with working lights, signals, and tires, and a valid registration).
- The Two-Part Test:
- 1. Maneuverability: Weaving through markers and backing into a 9'x20' box without hitting cones.
- 2. Road Test: A standard driving exam evaluating turns, stopping, signaling, and safety.
- Documentation to Bring: Your TIPIC, the 50-Hour Affidavit (BMV 5791) notarized, and your Driver Education Certificate of Completion.
4. Receive Your License
After passing, you will return to a deputy registrar agency to purchase your license.
Under 21: You will receive a Probationary License with specific restrictions (like passenger limits and night driving curfews) until you turn 18.
Over 21: You will receive a full, unrestricted license.
